“The Assassination of Benazir Bhutto and the Future of Pakistan”

What does the Pakistani leader’s death mean for the United States?

In the confused and frantic days following Benazir Bhutto’s assassination, the Pakistani government announced numerous causes of her death, ranging from gunshot wounds to her being thrown against the sunroof of the car in which she was riding. While the cause of her death was hard to pinpoint, the effects were immediate: Massive waves of rioting and violence erupted in the country. “The Assassination of Benazir Bhutto and the Future of Pakistan,” presented by the World Affairs Council of Houston, examines what Bhutto’s death means politically for Pakistan and the United States. Frederic Grare, a visiting scholar with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and an expert on South Asia, will lead the talk, exploring why someone wanted Bhutto assassinated and who stands to benefit from her death. 6:30 p.m. The Junior League Ballroom, 1811 Briar Oaks Lane.
