Anne Winters

An award-winning writer reads from her latest book of poetry

By Olivia Flores Alvarez

Published on January 16, 2008 at 1:40am

Poets love to make readers dig for meaning — of a title, a phrase, a symbol. Anne Winters does exactly that with The Displaced of Capital. (Fans of Winters’s first book, The Key to the City, have waited 18 years for Displaced.) The “displaced” in the title refers to New York City’s marginalized populations. Alternatively a glittering city of dreams and an urban nightmare, New York is the backdrop to most of Winters’s work, as she addresses issues of homelessness and poverty, social justice and political inequality. (No cheery, mass-audience rhymes here.) Already established as an important writer on the New York scene, Winters won the William Carlos Williams Award for Displaced. (You’d be more impressed with that if you were a poetry fanatic.) 7:30 p.m. Brazos Bookstore, 2421 Bissonnet. For information, call 713–523–0701 or visit brazos.booksense.com. Free
