Frozen at Theater LaB Houston

This Tony Award-nominated play examines revenge, grief and forgiveness

By Julia Ramey

‘‘I tell friends what the play is about, and most of them say, ‘I’d love to come, but I have to rearrange my spice rack,’” actress Swoosie Kurtz said in an interview when she was starring in the Broadway production of Frozen. She went on: “But the play is not about pedophilia. It’s about redemption and grace.’’

Now onstage at Theater LaB Houston, Frozen, the tale of a criminal psychologist, a serial-killing pedophile and the mother of one of his victims, explores both forgiveness and revenge, but it’s best known for its bold foray into the world of grief — and its dramatic ending, when the mourning mother confronts the man who kidnapped, raped and killed her daughter. Despite its dark content, Bryony Lavery’s play was a huge success: It received a Tony nomination for Best Play in 2004. See why at today’s opening. 8 p.m. today and Fridays and Saturdays through February 9; 5 p.m. Sunday, January 27. 1706 Alamo Street.
